Èññëåäîâàòåëè ñòàâèëè ýêñïåðèìåíò ñ äîáðîâîëüöàìè, êîòîðûõ ïîãðóæàëè â âèðòóàëüíóþ ðåàëüíîñòü: îíè õîäèëè ïî êàêèì-òî èñòîðè÷åñêèì ìåñòàì, ñìîòðåëè óëè÷íûå ïðåäñòàâëåíèÿ, ñëóøàëè ðåïåòèöèþ îðêåñòðà è ïð.  âèðòóàëüíîé ðåàëüíîñòè ìîæíî áûëî ïîâîðà÷èâàòüñÿ êðóãîì è îñìàòðèâàòü åå, êàê óãîäíî.
 óñòðîéñòâî áûë âìîíòèðîâàí äàò÷èê, îòñëåæèâàþùèé íàïðàâëåíèå âçãëÿäà, è èññëåäîâàòåëè ìåíÿëè öâåòîâóþ íàñûùåííîñòü êàðòèíêè òàê, ÷òîáû ïîëíîñòüþ öâåòíîé áûëà òîëüêî çîíà ïî öåíòðó âçãëÿäà. Òðåòü äîáðîâîëüöåâ âîîáùå âèäåëà öâåòà òîëüêî â ñàìîé öåíòðàëüíîé çîíå, ñîñòàâëÿâøåé âñåãî 5% îò âñåãî ïîëÿ çðåíèÿ.  äðóãîì âàðèàíòå ýêñïåðèìåíòà íóæíî áûëî îïðåäåëèòü, êàêîé öâåò òåðÿåò íàñûùåííîñòü íà ïåðèôåðèè, è ðåçóëüòàòû îêàçàëèñü ïîõîæè - áîëüøèíñòâî íå çàìå÷àëî îñëàáëåíèÿ öâåòà.
 èññëåäîâàíèè ó÷àñòâîâàëî îêîëî 180 ÷åëîâåê, è âðÿä ëè âñå îíè áûëè ñ êàêîé-òî îäèíàêîâîé îñîáåííîñòüþ, íå ïîçâîëÿâøåé àäåêâàòíî âîñïðèíèìàòü öâåòà áîêîâûì çðåíèåì. Òàê ÷òî, ñêîðåå âñåãî, ýòî îáû÷íàÿ îñîáåííîñòü ÷åëîâå÷åñêîãî çðåíèÿ.
